Hi, I am a solider, and I am about to go onto a 4,000 mile pilgrimage to Mecca from Mali. This is also called a hajj.
On the hajj there are around 60,000 people, 100 camels, and 24,000 pounds of gold. The reason that Mansa Musa (the King) sent me on the hajj was to protect him and the gold, to show how powerful he is and to get rid of all of my sins.
About the hajj: -From Niami to Walata is about 500 miles -From Walata to Taghaza is about 600 miles -From Taghaza to Tuwat is about 250 miles -From Tuwat to Cario is about 2,000 miles -From Cairo to Mecca is another couple hundred miles -From Niami to Cario it is about 150 day trip
Right now we are in Taghaza. You could say that Taghaza is not the nicest place. The village in Taghaza has houses that are made out of camel skin. It is also just sand, rock, salt, and there are no trees.
About salt: The reason that we are in Taghaza is because they have salt mines here. Salt is one of the most important resources because salt preserves meat and gives flavor to food . They came here to trade salt for gold.
I never really explained why we go on a hajj to Mecca. We go on a hajj to Mecca to get rid of our sins and tp please God. We get this from the Qur'an (our holy book). The Qur'an also says to give gifts to the poor or the sick and that is is preferred to give the gifts in private. That is one of the reasons why we brought so much gold.
