Presidnet Johnson has been way to lenient to the South and has given them the rights to treat us blacks unfairlly and even prevent us from voting
Edward has been living a better life since he was recently freed due to the 13th amendment which abolished slavery. But things were still tough for him because of the things like the Jim Crow Laws and Black Codes that restrict his rights and freedoms
Edward is happy that he is free but he is also upset that things are still unfair. Also, he is struggling to support his family but thanks to the Freedmen's Bureau he has still been able to provide the basic necessities for his wife and kids.
Edward took a long walk into town to vote only to find out that he had to take a literacy test and pay a poll tax that he was not prepared for. And when he tried to argue that he shouldn't have to do that a police officer threw him out
