Only Ten is a short story about a ten year old boy solider who moved to Australia and had to start a new school in a new country.
PEARL AND HER LITTLE SISTER, SUZY SEE THE SHAH AT THE NURSERY
"See? It's growing. They're all growing."
"This is Suzy, She's three."
In the beginning the Shah was very Shy. When he was asked a question he would give short answers. The students thought he looked dark and sounded funny. Pearl would try to make conversation with him but instead of giving he answer he gave her more questions. This shows Pearl caring for him because she is from another country.
THREE YEAR OLD SUZY DIES
Bruce thought that the Shah was an undercover agent. At this point the Shah was still quiet however after a while of getting hit with a ruler he stood up for himself and said he was a solider. This shows the Shah starting to trust the other students the longer he has been there. During this Pearl told Bruce to stop, she was looking out for the Shah and wanted to help him.
THE SHAH AND PEARL INVITE BRUCE AND THE NARRATOR TO SIT WITH THEM
While Pearl was taking her little sister, Suzy to the library she passed the Shah at the nursery. He was happy to see Pearl. He was standing next to a mandarin tree, he grabbed the leaves and smelt them and said its growing. Pearl was confused about what the shah said but she was happy to see him talking and being out and about in the town.
Towards the end/middle of the story we see a different side of Pearl because her little sister dies. When she goes back to school she doesn't talk to the other students, Only the Shah because he knows what it is like to loose someone close. This shows Pearl understanding the Shah and knowing what he went through.
In morning recess Pearl and the Shah sat together and now she called him Huss. When Bruce came over to join the conversation Pearl and Huss just sat there. Then in afternoon recess they invited Bruce and the narrator over to sit with them. They all became good friends and now call Shah Horse. they now understand Horse's story.
