Robert Hooke invented a simple microscope, observed a piece of cork, then deemed the tiny boxes that made it up "cells". He was the 1st scientist to observe cells.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek created one of the best microscopes, and went on to make many more. He studied bacteria and other living organisms with them.
Matthias Schleiden used a microscope to study plants. He figured out that plants are made of cells. This was the beginning of the discovery of the cell theory.
Theodor Schwann worked with animal cells. He and Schleiden worked together, and figured out 2 things. 1, all living things are made of cells, and 2, cells are the smallest living things.
Rudolf Virchow figured out that cells come from other cells, which is now the 3rd part of the cell theory.
Rita Levi-Montalcini was a doctor, who's best known for her study of chemicals that help cells grow. She even earned a Nobel Prize for her work.
