During summer of 1976, teenager Lori Schiller becomes confused as to why she begins to hear voices throughout her time at summer camp.
Lori attends Tufts University and her school year starts off well. However, as time passes by she begins to hear the Voices more often and she is unaware of what is causing this.
As Lori continues to experience auditory hallucinations, her friends become worried possibly thinking that she has fallen into the hands of drugs.
Lori seeks help from her parents after she has attempted suicide. She is placed is various different hospitals, visits with various specialists, and is given different medications and treatments. However, she has various relapses, continues to attempt suicide.
After being in and out of hospitals, Lori is diagnosed with schizophrenia. Lori tries to bring her life back to normal. She applies for a job at the hospital in New York where she had been a patient. She planned to help others who had similar situations like hers.
Although Lori had various people supporting her, she had bad friendships causing her to continue taking drugs. This began to affect her schizophrenia causing her to become troubled. Due to these episodes, she was placed in The Quiet Room various times during her shifts. This room was meant to help her calm down but at times the Voices seemed to rage and fill the silence.
