  • William the Conqueror
  • i, William, am now the king of England
  • Domesday Book
  • Henry II
  • I am king Henry II
  • On Christmas day 1066, William assumed the crown of England after defeating another person who also wanted power at the Battle of Hastings. He had the Domesday census taken to learn about his kingdom. This helped William and future kings build a successful system of collecting taxes, which would help them build up their kingdom.
  • King John
  • William created the Domesday book. It was a census that counted all of the people and property of England. William used it to collect taxes to help the kingdom of England to grow.
  • Edward I
  • Expanded the system of royal justice; laid the basis for common law; began jury system.
  • Magna Carta
  • In 1215, King John of England was forced to sign the Magna Carta stating that the king was not above the law of the land and protecting the right people.
  • I am King John
  • He conquered Wales and fought relentlessly to subdue Scotland
  • i am King Edward I
  • By 1215, thanks to years of unsuccessful foreign policies and heavy taxation demands, England’s King John was facing down a possible rebellion by the country’s powerful barons. Under duress, he agreed to a charter of liberties known as the Magna Carta (or Great Charter) that would place him and all of England’s future sovereigns within a rule of law.
