  • Jamestown Kate Littlepage Period 8
  • The tobacco is growing very well!
  • Yes, it is! I guess that's why we call it our cash crop.
  •
  • It takes so long for King James to get back to us.
  • Let's make the decision on behalf of King James.
  • Economic: Their cash crop was tobacco which was grown in fertile soil in the settlement located in Virginia. Tobacco was an export that made most of their wealth.
  • There's too many mosquitoes!
  • Social: Many people died of starvation, it was called the starving time. The plantations were not thriving in the cold weather.
  • "Why is it surprising that Jamestown was a success?": It was surprising that Jamestown was successful because of many deaths due to starvation, the several people killed by natives, the many dead from diseases, the high tide mixing waste into the water they used- killed some fish/food, not many doctors, and the crops didn't grow very well because of the winter season.
  • Political: Some of the colonists formed a Representative Government. It was made so that they could make  decisions faster when the King James I is away from the colony or they are not able to contact him.
  • Geography: The land in Virginia, where their colony was located, was swampy. The colony was also near the James River and Chesapeake Bay. Their location by water sources helped them with imports/exports and getting water. One of the bad things about the swamp was that it caused mosquitoes to swarm and some carried diseases.
