My name is Toussaint L'Ouverture. I was born a slave but later on I was able to drive Napoleon out of Haiti. Let me tell you about my journey to get there.
Fortunately, I had a liberal master who allowed me to learn how to read and write. This allowed me to get an education.
I became the leader of the slave rebellion and I brilliantly lead my slave army. We successfully fought the French and invaded the Spanish and British.
There was a celebration between the blacks back in Haiti so I agreed to join the French army and fight Britain. I proved to be a brillient leader and won many wars. I "became a de facto governor of the colony".
I agree to "recognize Haitian independence".
Napoleon and Toussaint agreed to terms of peace.
In exchange for independence, I agree to "retire from public life".
Sadly, I was betrayed by Napoleon and he broke the peace agreement. He ordered French men to arrest me and to put me in a prison dungeon in the mountains. I died in prison because they murdered me through starvation, the cold, and neglect.
