  • Stanley received a letter from his mom.  He thought Zero was trying to read his letter.  Zero then told Stanley that he couldn't read so he didn't know what the letter said.  So, they made a deal.  Zero would dig a part of Stanley's hole everyday and then Stanley would teach him how to read and write. This went on for a very long time and the two boys became great friends.

  • After Zero ran away Stanley stole the water truck.  He drove the water truck into a hole then he ran off to find Zero.  Stanley found Zero and they climbed a mountain called "God's Thumb".  Stanley had to carry Zero up the mountain. For days they were living off onions and were still alive! "Stanley carrying Zero up the mountain shows that friends and family are important."
  • Stanley decided to dig one more hole. So they left the mountain and went back to Camp Green Lake. In the final hole they dug, they found a treasure chest.  The warden told everyone that it was her treasure, but it had Stanley's name on it. "When friends and family work together they can accomplish anything."
  • The great great  grandson of Elya Yelnats carried up Madame Zeroni's great great great grandson up the mountain.  That was the story of Stanley Yelnats and Hector Zeroni becoming next door neighbors!
