Lourdes leaves to the United States in hopes of a better life, leaving Enrique and Belky with their grandmother as toddlers. She says goodbye to Belky, but avoids saying goodbye to Enrique. She steps off the porch of her house, which is later mentioned various times in the novel.
When Lourdes is in the United States, she meets a man named Santos. She gets accidentally pregnant with him, which caused Santos to leave her alone with their daughter.

Lourdes moves to North Carolina where she gets a new job as a waitress in a Mexican restaurant. She gets money to send back home to Enrique and to keep for herself. She also gets a better home with less rent to pay.
After receiving calls from his mom telling him that she will be back in Christmas, Enrique remembers that she tells him that every year but never actually comes home. He starts to get angry at her for lying to him year by year.

Enrique and Maria Isabel, Enrique's crush for a few years, become a couple.
Enrique's uncle, Marco, gets shot while trading money near the El Salvador border, along with his brother. They both pass away in the incident.
