As a wood frog, I can start to feel it getting cooler. Now that I am no longer a tadpole I eat more so I produce glucose to hibernate. The coolness in the air triggers my body to freeze the water in my blood over a couple of weeks.
Spring
Winter has begun and I need shelter. I find a safe place to hide. It's referred to as a frozen tomb. Before hibernation, I need to find as much water to produce urine to survive.
My DNA is specialized so I can mix my urine with the glucose in my blood to produce antifreeze. This protects my cells from getting frostbite. Since I've produced so much antifreeze I'm able to survive the winter as low as 3 degrees.
It begins to get warmer and soon spring arrives. As the temperature rises above freezing my body begins to defrost. The ice melts and the water absorbs back into my cells and within 30 minutes my heart starts.
After 2 days I've regained my power and go to look for another wood frog to mate with to reproduce and food to eat.
