Storyboard Text

  • Philadelphia Convention 1787
  • Us Northerners demand the South has to pay taxes for their slaves as they are their property, yet to have them not count as population.
  • The Southerners disagree wholeheartedly, we refuse to pay taxes but insist that our slaves are apart of the population to be counted in the House of Representatives
  • Wait! I, Roger Sherman, think I have a solution called the three-fifths compromise! Every 5 slaves, the government will count 3 of them to tax for the North and 3 of them to be represented in the population, which in turn will allow the South to have more house of representatives.
  • The North is just happy that most of the South's property is taxed.
  • The Three Fifths Compromise We, both the North and the South agree to tax 3 out of every 5 slaves but also count them in population count for representation in House of Representatives
  • North                                 South
  • Us Southerners are able to have more of a say in the House of Representatives but sadly we are now taxed
