The gear shift was on the floor next to the seat. Stanley pulled the lever back until the arrow pointed to the letter D, for Drive. The truck lurched forward. Stanley jerked back against the seat and tightly gripped the wheel as the truck accelerated. His foot was pressed to the floor. The truck went faster and faster across the dry lake bed. It bounced over a pile of dirt.
Segment 7, Chapter 1?
Stanley’s hole was as deep as his shovel, but not quite wide enough on the bottom. He grimaced as he sliced off a chunk of dirt, then raised it up and flung it onto a pile.He laid his shovel back down on the bottom of his hole and, to his surprise, it fit. He rotated it and only had to chip off a few chunks of dirt, here and there, before it could lie flat across his hole in every direction. He heard the water truck approaching, and felt a strange sense of pride at being able to show Mr. Sir, or Mr. Pendanski, that he had dug his first hole.
Segment 26 Chapter 24
He kept walking toward it, although he didn’t know why. He knew he’d have to turn around before he got there. But every time he looked at it, it seemed to encourage him, giving him the thumbs-up sign.
In this chapter Stanley takes Mr. Sirs water truck to go save his Zero thats probably dying, I think this helps out my theme which is to never give up and perservere because Stanley didnt just give up on his friend and let him die, he went and stole a car to save his friend .
Segment 36 Chapter 45
In this segment Stanley digs his first hole at Camp Green Lake , and is tired and can barlely walk. This contributes to my theme to never give up and to perservere because Stanley is not the type to give up, Like Mr Pendanskey said, people have fainted on their first hole but Stanley on the other hand, perservered.
Segment 30 Chapter 38
In this Segment Stanlay is incouraged to find the green thumb and go to it. I think this contributes to my theme because Stanley is perservering through the desert and not giving up to go to the thumb.
Segment 35 Chapter 44
Stanley could hear his heart beat. Each beat told him he was still alive, at least for one more second.Five hundred seconds later, his heart was still beating. Stanley felt the blast shatter the air around him. The lizards scurried frantically across his very still body. He did not flinch. A lizard ran across his closed mouth.
In this Chapter Stanley was digging his last whole when yellow spotted lizards are crawling on his body. I think That this shows to never give up and perservere because he stays strong even when death stares him in the eye. Those yellow spotted lizards can kill you in one bite and thats pretty terrifing. I would be scared.
In the segment Stanley has to climb the green thumb with Zero on his back! I think this contributes to my theme to never give up becuase Stanleylegit has to carry his bodyweight and Zeros! He also had to walk all the way to the green thumb first and its unbelievable that he has that strentgh and that determination to do that.
Higher and higher he climbed. His strength came from somewhere deep inside himself and also seemed to come from the outside as well. After focusing on Big Thumb for so long, it was as if the rock had absorbed his energy and now acted like a kind of giant magnet pulling him toward it.
He was afraid that the only way to get to it was to start back up at the surface, and dig down. They didn’t have time for that.“I’m going to try to dig a hole underneath it,” he said. “Then maybe I can pull it down and slip it out.""Go for it,” said Zero. Stanley jammed the shovel into the bottom edge of his hole, and carefully began to dig a tunnel underneath the metal object. He hoped it didn’t cave in.
In this Chapter Stanley digs his last hole that he will ever dig. He is digging deeper than 5 feet to look for something valuable . I think this shows to never give up and to perservere because he didnt have to dig one last hole, he wanted to find something valuable, also he didnt give up while he was digging either.
