Because Castro was spared he was able to have a public trial where there he explained the Moncada Program which explained his vision for a new Cuba.
Castro was sentenced to 15 years in prison but was soon granted amnesty, he grew in popularity quickly.
After he was released from jail he fled to Mexico with his brother and meet Che Guevara and began to build his July 26th Movement group.
After the men attempted to attack the same military base as before they went into hiding in the Sierra Maestra mountains after the attack failed.
While in the mountains Castro and his men worked closely with the locals to gain their support in taking down Batista.
Castro used this found support to name his group the Fidelists and his attacks became more successful against Batista's troops.
