  • Because Castro was spared he was able to have a public trial where there he explained the Moncada Program which explained his vision for a new Cuba.
  • Castro was sentenced to 15 years in prison but was soon granted amnesty, he grew in popularity quickly.
  • After he was released from jail he fled to Mexico with his brother and meet Che Guevara and began to build his July 26th Movement group.
  • After the men attempted to attack the same military base as before they went into hiding in the Sierra Maestra mountains after the attack failed.
  • While in the mountains Castro and his men worked closely with the locals to gain their support in taking down Batista.
  • Castro used this found support to name his group the Fidelists and his attacks became more successful against Batista's troops.
