  • The Roman Catholic Church controlled 1/3 of Europe's land. Popes competed with kings for power. If anyone went against the pope they would excommunicate them (caused them to not get sacraments).

  • Martin Luther was a man from Germany who came disillusioned with the church after joining St. Augustine's Monastery . He became furious when he found out priests were selling indulgences. So he wrote "95 Theses". A list of 95 arguments against indulgences and posted it on the church's front door.

  • Luther 's ideas spread through Northern Germany and Scandinavia. In 1522 Luther traveled to Wittenberg Castle and began a new branch of Christianity called "Lutheranism".

  • People supported the Protestant Movement for many reasons. Some people saw it as an answer to the Roman Catholic Church's corruption while others like King Henry VIII used it to get wealth and power.
  • In 1546 Roman Emperor and his army attacks Protestant kings in Germany. Many years later the Thirty Years' War began in 1618 with high tensions between Catholics and Protestants.
  • While all the fights were happening Frenchman John Calvin wrote 'Institutes of the Christian Religion'. John Calvin lead a community in Switzerland. He created a theocracy. Calvinists were different than Catholics and Lutherans. Calvinists often faced opposition from them.
