  • The Estates-General was a key event in the French Revolution. This began as a meeting of the "three estates" of French society to try and solve the issues troubling the nation. The government was in extreme debt due to their involvement in a number of wars and several years of crop failure. The peasant class had been angered by the rise in prices of bread, which exacerbated pre-existing tensions between the land-holding nobility and the laborers who worked the land.

  • On 20 June 1789, the members of the French Third Estate took the Tennis Court Oath (French: Serment du Jeu de Paume), vowing "not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established". It was a pivotal event in the French Revolution.

  • Napoleon is forced to abdicate the throne. With the Treaty of Fontainebleau, he was exiled to Elba, a Mediterranean island off the coast of Italy.
