  • where I stand are the lowlands ad over there are the Highlands where  maize, squash, and beans are planted. A;though, down here in the lowlands the  only  plants grown are the  palm avocado and  the cacao plant.

  • I am one of the many crafted headstones that represent different Olmec rulers.

  • "We will be the next rulers of our people''
  • Geographical features greatly influenced the development of civilizations in Mesoamerica. The landscape was divided into two main geographical areas. These two areas were the high lands and the low lands. Different agricultural technique for farming were used in the regions varied landscapes. One of the most common  techniques was known as "slash and burn agriculture."
  • Maya
  • "I am the great Maize God" (corn)
  • Like the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China, the Olmec emerged on the floodplains of rivers. Heavy rains caused the rivers to flood and deposit fertile silt on their plains. This allowed farmers to grow abundant crops and change the culture of the Olmec forever.
  • Aztec
  • In the later period of the Zapotec, the center of power shifted when a city now known as Monte Alban was built. The site of Monte Alban overlooked the Oaxaca valley and helped defend themselves against enemies.
  • Hernan Cortes
  • The maize god was one of the most important Maya gods. The god often appeared as a handsome young man with his hair made of maize silk. The god represented the cycle of life (birth, death, rebirth) as well as the cycle of maize (planting, harvesting, replanting).
