  • By Chitoo E.
  • Criminal law is when the government punishes people accused of crimes.Like murder
  • Civil law is a dispute between private individuals. Like neighbors disputing over dog problems.
  • SCENARIO 1: A man killed his boss, since the plaintiff (the boss) isn't here to press charges, now the claim depends on the witnesses and ctv cameras.
  • The defendant (killer) has been charged with first degree murder and will serve 30 years in prison.
  • The judge redress's (fix) the situation by telling the defendant (yellow shirt) to put a leash on the dog and to put a fence on their side off the land or else they will take the dog.
  • SCENARIO 2: Two neighbors are arguing over dog problems. One neighbor's dog has been constantly peeing on the others land.
  • But the plaintiff (red shirt) wants to sue the defendant for personal injury, tests were ran but no scratches were found.
  • The judge explains that you can't prosecute someone without a legal reason, unless if you want to get into trouble for lying in court. And the judge"s decisions werefinal.
  • Vocabulary: -Redress= set right an unfair situation-Prosecute= institute legal proceedings against a person or company-Plaintiff= a person who brings a case to court-Defendant= the party responding-First degree murder= the most serious of all homicide offenses, it involves any intentional murder.-Punish=i inflict a penalty on someone for an offense.
