  • The Sun
  • Auggie's Face
  • The Mutant Gene
  • The Sun is a symbol of light and warmth. The planets that are farther out in the universe can't be filled with the light and warmth and that is what the sun brings to the planets that are willing to get close enough to it.
  • Auggie's face a symbol for a mask. Auggie's masks prevent people from looking past the mask that is covering his face and looking at the face that is underneath. August's face is like that. It prevents people from looking past what's on the outside and instead at the person that is underneath his face.
  • Augusts craniofacial anomalie was caused by a mutant gene that both is parents carried. That mutant gene is a symbol for standing out and being different. August is the mutant gene in his life and he is surrounded by normal genes. In the book, the mutant gene went to war with the normal genes and changed the way August looked. Like the mutant gene, August went to war with a lot of the kids in his grade and he changed the way they looked at him.
