  • The "starving time" when the Virginians, crazed for want of food, roamed the woods for nuts and berries, dug up graves to eat the corpses, and died in batches until five hundred colonists were reduced to sixty.

  • The arrival of a ship in North America carrying twenty slaves.

  • The first American slave ship, the Desire, sailed from Marblehead. 
  • A law passed in 1639 decreed that "all persons except Negroes" were to get arms and ammunition.
  • By 1700, in Virginia, there were 6,000 slaves, one-twelfth of the population. By 1763, there were 170,000 slaves, about half the population.
