John Motley was elected governor in 1840, as part of the Whig political party. He was well liked by the people in the west and they strongly supported him. He was eventually elected again because of what he did.
John Motley was a strong supporter of improving North Carolina as a whole, he spent lots of money on improvements for education, transportation, and places for the less fortunate.
John supported a lot of things that went towards the western side of NC, the creation of public schools and the extension of railroads were some major things he supported. But he also funded the creation of a school for Deaf People and the less fortunate
