- Ethos
- You have read books, I, on the other hand, have written books about the hunt. I also fought in the war and from that experience, I am scarred for life. I do not wish to harm another human again.
- You see, I read all books on hunting published in English, French, and Russian. I have but one passion in life, Mr. Rainsford, and it is the hunt."
- Logos
- Will a hunting knife do them any good compared to a pistol? A pistol has a way longer range than any knife. Your practices are simply nothing but an attempt to torture humans!
- I suggest to one of them that we go hunting. I give him a supply of food and an excellent hunting knife. I give him three hours' start. I am to follow, armed only with a pistol of the smallest caliber and range
- Pathos
- You make it sound so negative. What is the difference between hunting humans and animals. Both have feelings, emotions, and the right to think. We are the same.
- Hunting humans? That is murder, a crime! Do you not have sympathy for huntee? The fear... why would you wish that on another? That is a wrongdoing and you know that deep down.
- As a retaliation, Rainsford uses his experience in war and the fact that he published many hunting books to persuade General Zaroff that hunting humans is morally wrong. He uses his credibility and experience to tell Zaroff that hunting other humans is not right and that he knows because he has, in a way, done it before.
- This dialogue conveys the appeal of logos as Rainsford is using reason and facts to convince General Zaroff that hunting humans isn’t morally right, and that in reality a hunting knife is nothing compared to a pistol which can kill in seconds. Rainsford uses his knowledge of the hunt and logic to tell Zaroff that the fight is nowhere close to fair.
- This is an example of pathos because Rainsford tries to persuade Zaroff that hunting humans is considered an act of murder which goes against society ideals . He mentions the fear and emotions that the human will have and tells Zaroff to dig deep and sympathize because he will know that it is morally wrong.
