Little Hans was a 3 year old boy from Austria. Initially he was a cheerful little boy who was develping normally but then he developed a phobia.
His family members consisting of his father, mother and younger sister all play important parts in this longtidutional study. Hans and his family were selected for this as Hans' father was very interested in Freud's work and wanted to give Freud the oppertunity to explore his theories abou the origin of phobias and psychosexual development.
For the study the research method used was a longtidutional design which lasted for 2 years and the study came to an end when Hans was 5 years old. The research techniques used were a mixture of self report and interviews; observations were also used.
From the age of 3 Little Hans had developed a great interest in penis. When he was 3 1/2 years old his mother found him with his hand on his penis and threatened him with the words ''If you do that I shall send for Dr. A to cut off your widdler and then what will you do with it.''
Hans had a fantasy of wanting his sister to be dropped in the bath and drowning and then dying. Because of this Hans had a fear of taking a bath. This was because his little sister was getting all of the attention from his mom.
Overtime Hans developed a phobia of being bitten by horses. This is because he was reminded of the time he was caught by his mom when his father was warning his little sister. He also didn't like riding horses with black bits around it due to it reminding him of his father's moustache.
