Principle #1-Genetic Variation- Both insects live in the same environment and eat the same food. The lighter green insects have become immune to the pesticides given off in their environment, so the pesticide has no effect on the them. However the darker green insects are not resistant to the pesticides. The resistant mutation can be passed down to the offspring. The dark green insects are affected by the pesticide because they do not have the mutations that would make them resistant.
Principle #2-Overproduction and Struggle for Survival- The darker green insects are dying because they do not have the mutation that resists the fatal pesticide. The light green insects are surviving and passing on the mutation to their offspring. Not all the insects are dying . The dark green insects do not live a long life.
Principle#3 Differential Survival and Reproduction- The lighter green insects are able to survive because they have become immune to the pesticide that is meant to kill them . The surviving light green insects are able to reproduce ,allowing them to pass on the resistant mutation on to their offspring. This will result in the offspring also being immune to the pesticide .
Principle#4 Change in Gene Pool- Over time,the light green insects population will increase because they are able to survive and reproduce . Meanwhile the dark green population on insects will decrease because they cannot adapt to their environment causing them to die early and not reproduce.
