Whenever the Jews were being relocated to a different concentration camp, they would pack 100 in a cattle trailer. In the trailers there was not even enough room to sit, they all had to stand.
At this point the Jewish prisoners were being run in very extreme conditions, even though they were actually free. They did not know they were free and many ending up dying in this last run. Elle was trying to keep his Dad motivated so that he would not die. His was angry at God, wondering why God would want him to watch his father die.
The Jewish prisoners were told they were going to take showers. The reality was that they were fake showers and they were being killed by gas.

With the arrival came the terrible reality of their new life. "I wanted to run away, but my feet were nailed to the floor." (p.10) This means that he knew there was nothing he could do to change his situation. Elle's faith began dwindling when this reality set in, because he realizes what he is going to go through and wonders why God would allow this.

The Jewish prisoners had to work at the crematory. They were used to dispose of the bodies that were killed by toxic gases. At this point Elle is losing his humanity and has little faith in God.

The Jews had to go see a dentist so they could remove any gold or silver from their teeth. They did not want to leave the Jews with anything of any value. "The dentist had a face not unlike a death mask." (p.51) Finding out they were going to the dentist was actually a good thing, because it meant you weren't to the gas chamber.
