Storyboard Text

  • "She isn't the least bit frightened lying there, surrounded by fifty thousand pounds of steer" (59).
  • Signpost: Contrast & Contradiction
  •        Signpost: Numbers & Stats
  • "Slowly, carefully, four dozen thousand-pound steers walk over, forming a circle around her prone body" (59).
  • Mindset: Growth
  • "The psychologist tried to make her give up the squeeze machine" (65).
  • "The fixation the psychologist had found 'strange' and 'sick' became the subject of Temple's senior thesis in psychology, testing the sensory effects of the squeeze machine on forty 'normal' college students" (71-72).
  • The difference is that people are afraid in most situations involving animals that Temple isn't. This matters because it shows that Temple is braver than most people may believe.
  • Word Gap: attuned
  • "Her senses are ratcheted up- attuned to sounds and details that humans don't notice but animals do" (60).
  • The author used these numbers to show the danger that Temple is possibly in.
  • Summary: 5-7 word gist
  • Temple invented her squeeze machine.
  • This shows a growth mindset because even though she was told to give up her squeeze machine, she kept going and even got others to help out with it. If she had given it up, then people with autism might not have gotten a way to relieve stress.
  • Book Club Question
  • How will Temple's dad react to the squeeze machine?
  • Definition: accustom or acclimatize. Technical Term? No
  • Why would the psychiatrist say Temple's squeeze machine is stupid?
