The prophet Muhammad has just passed away, his closest companion comes by to discover the news.
The prophet has died!
After Muhammad had passed, there was a meeting to decide his successor. The choices were Ali,the prophet's cousin, and Abu Bakr, the prophet's closest friend.
Abu Bakr was chosen as the caliph. He went on to lead the Muslim people for four years. While on his deathbed he appointed 6 people to choose his successor.
I entrust you to choose my successor.
After the death of Caliph Abu Bakr, there was a meeting to decide the next caliph. Uthman was chosen.
Later that night, as Uthman prayed, two rebels snuck into his home and killed him. Ali was chosen as the next caliph.
As Ali delivered his speech to the people, M'awiya spoke about how he should be the next caliph, even though he wasn't related to the prophet. He and his supporters believe that the caliph should be anyone worthy. They call themselves the Sunni muslims. Ali and his supporters believe that the caliph should be related to the prophet. They call them selves the Sh'ia muslims.
