  • Rome is located in Italy which is a peninsula that reaches into the Mediterranean Sea.  Rome lies close to the Tiber river.
  • Etruscan Influence of Sports
  • A princess gave birth to twin sons, Romulus and Remus.  The princess's uncle (the king) feared they would take his thrown, so he tried to drown them in the Tiber River.  A wolf saved them so they built a city where they were saved.  They fought over who would rule the new city and Romulus killed Remus and called the town Rome.  
  • Greek Influence of Architecture
  • The Romas learned many techniques of engineering from the Etruscans.  They used arches in many of their buildings.  
  • Influence of Writing, Art, and Religion
  • Slave fighting was a popular sporting event done at funerals.  Two slaves of the dead master fought with swords and shields.
  • The Greeks built temples for their Gods which often had huge columns.  
  • The Greeks worshiped many gods and goddesses.  They performed rituals, such as having a good harvest, to gain the gods' favor.
