  • Scene 1:Flood of the Yellow River Valley
  • Scene 2: Sino-Japanese War
  • Scene 3: May 4th movement 1919
  • Irrigation systems and the canal were poorly maintained, leading to the flooding of the Yellow River Valley. An Imperial court, tax evasion by the rich and the peasants rebelled.
  • In 1894 Japanese pressure on China created the Sino Japanese War. It ended very badly for China as Japan gained Korea and the island of Taiwan.
  • On May 4th in 1919 the Chinese were very upset about losing Shandong Province to the Japanese since they expected that the region would be returned to them. This started the May 4th movement in which Students at Beijing’s major universities marched in protest and were soon joined by professors, workers, and businessmen in nearly 100 cities across China.
