The British soldiers were unsure of the Acadians loyalty towards them. One main reason was that the French and British were at the verge of a war. In regards, The British forced the Acadians to sign a treaty agreeing, that if a war were ever to break out the Acadians would side with the British. The Acadians disagreed and said they would stay neutral between the two colonies.
You are obligated to sign a treaty stating that you will side with us when a war breaks out if not we will go to extreme measures
we told you, we would stay neutral if a war were ever to rise.
The British did not lie, and burned down the Acadians houses right in front of their eyes. At this time many were already on ships and some were taken outside of their houses. The acadians managed to bring a few belongings but left the rest behind.
I never would have thought that they would burn down our houses. Especially in front of our eyes
Many families did not have a choice of where to go because the British were in a rush, many people had no idea where they were going.
You have to make a choice. You can either go back to france, leave for louisiana or boston or go and live with the Miq-Maq.
Please don't seperate me from my dad!
The Acadians were put on ships, and sent to the places they chose. Many were separated from their families during this procedure. On the ships many got sick and some ships sank.
I don't feel so well
In Boston many of the Acadians were faced with discrimination. This is because many British Soldiers were still in Boston. They were not aware of the Acadians arrival and henceforth were not willing to share their land with them.
We have no land. we can't make any money! How are we going to survive?
The Acadians who were sent to Louisiana faced less discrimination for the following reasons. 1) the people back in Louisiana knew of the Acadians arrival 2) The land was controlled by French and Spanish soldiers and 3) The people back in Louisiana needed farmers and since the Acadians knew how to farm they were given jobs.
