Mathilde is the protagonist. She was born in worker family and yearns for luxurious items. Her husband, Loisel, works at the Ministry of Education and is content with his life.
Loisel and Mathilde got invite to Mme. Georges Rampouneau ball. When Loisel showed the invitation to Mathilde she was resentful. She said that she has no nice clothes or jewelry to wear so Loisel told her to go to Madame Forestier to borrow some jewelry.
Mathilde recognizes that Mme. Forestier’s necklace she had borrowed was gone on her way back home. Mathilde and Loisel searched everywhere but couldn’t find the necklace. They agreed to not tell Mme. Forestier about losing it until they find a replacement.
After Mathilde lost the necklace she and Loisel worked to pay off all the loans they took to pay for the new almost exactly same looking necklace. When Mathilde finally paid off all the loans in 10 years she talked to Mme. Forestier again. Mme. Forestier told Mathilde that the necklace was a cheap copy that was worth 500 not 36k francs.
