In the exposition in the story Three Skeleton Keys, it tells how the "island" got its name. The island was named Three Skeleton Keys because of three escaped prisioners. These convicts crashed their canoe on the rock. They eventually died of thirst and hunher, and legend says that the skeletons dance around the island screaming. The three main characters get a job working at the lighthouse. One day a peculiar ship apeares going back and forth from the island. The ship is about to crash on Three Skeleton Keys.

It was too late for the ship to turn back and it was going to crash on the island! “Thunder!” cried Le Gleo, his Breton soul aching at seeing a fine ship doomed to smash upon a reef, “she’s going to pile up! She’s gone!”
