Storyboard Text

  • Whiskey Rebellion
  • Well dear it was the first tax imposed on a domestic product by the newly formed federal government.
  • Mom. I'm doing a school research paper. What was the whiskey tax?
  • Farmers of the western frontier were accustomed to distilling their surplus rye, or fermented grain mixtures into whiskey. They resisted the tax.
  • Who rebelled the tax?
  • Well, collection of the tax met violent resistance, but when President Washington called out the militia, the rebellion collapsed.
  • How was it stopped?
  • That's a long time.
  • Where and what year did this happen?
  • It happened in Pennsylvania in the years 1791-1794.
  • Opposition to the tax and rebellion  built support for the Republicans, which overtook Washington's Federalist Party for power in 1802.
  • How did the Whiskey Rebellion challenge the U.S government?
