1517 Martin Luther reportedly nailed his " 95 theses" to the door of the Church. The 95 these were 95 things that Luther thought was wrong and needed to be fixed in the Catholic Church.
" 95 Theses"
Martin Luther's Beliefs: 1. Sola Scripture: Tradition has no place or pope has no place. 2. Sola Fide: Work of mercy, good deeds, do not help you become righteous. 3.Sola gratia: Any good action is a result of God's grace. 4.Sola Christo: Christ must be the sole content of the scriptures.
Catholic church rejected "sola fide" ( Faith alone). The church believes that we need faith and good works for salvation. There are also 7 sacraments, not just 2.
Protestant don't see the pope as God 1# leader on earth. Most Protestant don't believe that Jesus is present in the Eucharist.
The Church responded to Martin Luther by doing their own counter reformation. It call the Council of Trent in 1545. The purpose of the council was to clearly define the teaching of the church. Stop the abused and corruption in the Church and regulate the training for Priests.
Council of Trent
