  • How Gallaudet and Clerc Meet
  • I would be willing to go to Paris to learn sign language
  •  Gallaudet you should come to Pairs to learn sign language.
  • Gallaudet this is one of my best students Clerc
  • Gallaudet in Paris
  • Clerc, I invited you to go to America and helpme establish the first school for deaf.
  • Let me think about it.
  • Off to American
  • This how you sign thinking
  • This how you write English
  • Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was sent to travel in Europe to learn about teaching methods for the deaf. While Gallaudet was in England he tried to get the Braidwoods secrets but failed. Then Gallaudet gets introduced by a member of Parliament to Roch-Ambroise Cucurron Sicard. Sicard introduced Gallaudet to Clerc.  Clerc and the others invited Gallaudet to vist and take classes at Institution in Paris. Gallaudet gladly accepted their offer.
  • Arrival to America
  • The deaf can learn this way. It gives them change to be a working citizen.
  • Gallaudet was in Pairs, at the Institut National de Jeunes Sourds de (National Institute of Young Deaf) learning sign language. He was given private lessons by Clerc, who had become Sicard's chief assistant. Gallaudet was so impressed by Clerc that he invited Clerc to go to America and help him establish the first school for deaf there.
  • The first school
  • Before Clerc left for America, Gallaudet had to first get  Abbe Sicard permission for Clerc to leave. This only possible because Sicard made Gallaudet sign a contract stated that Clerc was only loan to sates for three years in the States. While on the 52 day journey Clerc taught Gallaudet more sign language, and Gallaudet taught Clerc English.
  • The Legacy
  • When Gallaudet and Clerc arrived to America hat same day, Clerc met Alice Cogswell and communicated with her through sign associations. Clerc had concluded that Alice Cogsweel was a very intelligent girl who was staved for knowledge, but had no language. Gallauet and Clerc went to work giving speeches about their teaching methods to get public, legislative, and financial support for their goals for a school for the deaf
  • The First School for the Deaf in America rented rooms made up their school which opened with seven students. Gallaudet was the principal, and Clerc was the head teacher. The next year the school was filled with students.
  • This is the sign for a bird
  • As time went and deaf people started getting graduate for the school they started setting up other schools for the deaf all over the USA. Without Galluadet and Clerc there would never be schools for the deaf in the US
