This shows Orwell's inner conflict with himself, because he does not know whether to shoot the animal to not look like a fool in front of all 2,000 natives or if he should not shoot the animal because it is peacefully eating and not bothering anyone.
Should I shoot the elephant and not embarrass myself or should i not shoot the innocent and tamed large animal?
Man Vs. Society
The people are all anxiously waiting and are excited for the elephant to be killed but Orwell does not want to hurt or kill the animal. However he is left with no choice because the animal killed a innocent man and broke many things
Hmmm I don't know what to do. Look how peacefully you are eating and not bothering anyone. Ugh, but also all these people are expecting me to do this and I do not want to look like a huge fool in front of all of them.
Man Vs. Nature
What have I done. I killed this animal. I am sorry mother nature but I had to save myself and save my face as a police officer. I just had to protect these people they had no weapons. and I couldn't embarrass myself.
Here it shows how Orwell was left no choice but to save his reputation and had to kill the kind animal. Even though you don't always want to do something you have to please the people around you and save your face and reputation.
