One theme of the story is: refusing to take risks is a way of being stuck. I believe that this theme is evident because mom because mom is afraid of taking risks for example she thought that if she gave a key to Richard that meant that she would have to be stuck with him.
pg.61 "Isn't it weird, though?" (stead 61) that proves that miranda was very confused and doubtful. she was freaked out that someones had just stolen their key and in the first note it asked about where was the location of the key to their apartment

After, both of them noticed they are friends and they are meant to be together.. "That's the thing, Mira. It wasn't normal. I didn't have any other friends! Not real friends." this says that Sal was tired of hanging out with Miranda because she was her only friend
