Hoot, by Carl Hiassen, is about a boy named Roy Eberhardt. He moves to Florida and needs to go to a new school. At his new school, he has a bully, And while he's on the bus he notices a boy without any shoe that he's never seen before. He runs after him and runs into a girl named Beatrice Leap, but he keeps chasing him and he chases him into a golf course and gets hit by a golf ball. Later he finds out the boy he saw running became friends and try to save owls that will get killed at a construction site if they don't do anything about it, so they try to save them and they do.

On the right is Ruy Eberhardt. The main character of the story. In the middle is Beatrice Leap and her stepbrother Napoleon. And on the right is Dana, the school bully.
There are many different problems in the story. One problem is that Dana keeps bullying Roy. Another problem is that the owls will get buried if they don't do anything about it. Those are two problems in the story.
They go to an event at the construction site, that is when they will bulldoze the owls. But Roy, Beutrice and Napolean fight to save the owls. And they succeeded to do it. They made it so that they can't bury the owls. And they need to make the building in a different place.
Don't hurt the owls!
In the end, the owls do not get buried. Roy, Beatrice, and Napolean saved the owls. And the company needs to place to put the building for there company. Also, the vise president of the company gets so mad that he starts to choke the news paper writer.
