  • Lewis and Clark Expedition
  • This is Lewis and Clark on their expedition to explore the land bought by the US from France, which was west of the Mississippi River. This was in 1804 and was significant because this greatly expand the US and where US citizen could settle.
  • Zebulon Pike
  • Zebulon Pike also explored the land west of the Mississippi river but more to the north in the Ohio and Indiana area. He also explored Colorado and named Pike's peak after himself. This as important because US citizen could settle in these areas now.
  • Leading to the Battle of Tippecanoe
  • All these expeditions led to the war of Tippecanoe, which was a war between the native Americans and the United States. The native Americans were led by Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa, and the US was led by William Henry Harrison.

  • William Henry Harrison was aware that the Native Americans, led by Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa, were becoming more militant and might be preparing to attack the US settlements.
  • Governor Harrison led his militia to Prophetstown to put down the native American force, but Tenskwatawa sent out his forces first and they met at the Tippecanoe river.
  • The Battle of Tippecanoe left one-fourth of American troops dead or wounded, but the effect on the Native Americans was far greater. The Native Americans retreated up into Canada, further fueling the idea that the British were helping the Native Americans fight the United States.
