Jeremy invited his friends in to have some cake. There are more people than slices left. What will they do?
My birthday party was yesterday. Do you guys want to come in and have some cake?
What, there are only 3 pieces of cake left! What are we going to do?
Wait, I have an idea on how we can have equal parts. We will each have "Fair Share."
We have 4 people, so we can divide each piece of cake by 4. There will now be a total of 12 pieces, which will be our denominator. We will each get 1 part of each piece of cake. We will each get a total of 3 parts, which will be our numerator. We will get 3/12 of the cake, which is a fraction. This will give us equal amounts and a fair share.
This diagram shows that each piece of cake is divided by 4. Each color represents a different person. If each person gets 1/4 of each piece, they will get 3/12 of the total parts. In simplest form, they will get 1/4 of the pieces.
Fractions are fun. We have figured out how to share 3 pieces of cake equally by 4 people.
