In 1941, before the war, Roosevelt proposed new programs to help the allies in the war. Congress passed the Lend Lease Act that allowed the president to aid any nation believed vital to U.S. defense.
"We must be the great arsenal (arms supply) of democracy"
Since men were leaving home to fight in World War ll, the factories didn't have enough workers so the government made women work in these factories. Women were basically doing work that was usually considered "unladylike".
Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was determined to hold on to Stalingrad at all cost after the Germans set firebombs in the city. To fight back, Soviet soldiers used the ruined buildings to their advantage and fired back at the German soldiers behind the piles of bricks.
About 70,000 American and Filipino soldiers surrendered to the Japanese and they were required to march 63 miles to Bataan Peninsula to prison camps where they were starved and beaten by Japanese soldiers. This was called the Bataan Death March.
In the City of Hiroshimo, the atomic bomb was dropped. The whole city was destroyed after that and the explosion killed about 80,000 people instantly and even more died from radiation and burns.
After six years, World War ll finally ended. More than 50 million people were killed because of it. Since the war had been fought far from American soil
