As the assistance came, Frederick gave a heavy kick to Covey and that was enough to scare of the assistance off. Covey attempted to push Frederick on a stick but Frederick brought him to the ground before he could do so. All of a sudden Bill came. Covey wanted his assistance but Bill wanted to know what he could do. Bill wanted to help Covey but he was hired to work, not to help Covey whip people. They were fighting for almost two hours. Covey finally let go and Frederick was not whipped through the entire fight. The rest of the six months that Frederick was with Covey, he never whipped him again. This fight was the turning point in Frederick career, his self confidence shot up. But even though he never got whipped he still got into many fights. “I now resolved that, however long I might remain a slave in form, the day had passed forever when I could be a slave in fact.” Frederick Douglass
Frederick and Sandy finally got to Sandy’s wife’s house. When they got there Sandy said to Frederick, very seriously, that Frederick must go back to the plantation. Sandy said there was a certain part of the woods where there is a certain root, and if you keep that root right by your side at all times you would never get whipped by Mr. Covey, or any other white man again. Sandy said ever since he carried the root he was never been whipped. Frederick turned down the idea first but Sandy refused to let him go back to the plantation until he took the root. Frederick accepted and was on his way back to the plantation.
When Frederick got back to the plantation, Covey was strangely being nice to him by just saying that he needed to drive the pigs from a lot nearby, and passed on towards the church. Doing this it reminded Frederick of the root that he had in his pocket, on monday the root would be fully be tested. Long after daylight Frederick was called in to rub, brush, and feed the horses. As he was doing this Covey came in with a rope and tried to tie up Frederick legs. Frederick noticed that and suddenly leaped and escaped, Then Frederick grabbed Covey by the throat. Covey soon called in his assistance to help him because he knew he wasn’t going to win.
