  • Lenin returned from Switzerland with German assistance and issued his 'April Thesis'- it's likely that the Germans were encouraging a revolution!

  • response to the 'June Offensive' lead to mutinies and strikes across the city. Bolsheviks supported to the movement but did not take the opportunity to seize power. Lenin fled to Finland and Kerensky started propaganda campaign against Bolsheviks

  • General Kornilov (commander in chief of Russia) moved troops to Petrograd and Kerensky feared a military take over and freed imprisoned Bolsheviks and gave them weapons. Propaganda made the Bolsheviks heroes.

  • BOLSHEVIK IS NOW IN POWER!!
  • WE DID IT BOYS!!
  • Bolshevik membership rose to 200,000 with the party producing 41 different newspapers across Russia. An elite force of 'Red Guards' were recruited into Petrograd's factories, armed from the Kornilov Affair. End of September- the Bolsheviks had the majority in the Petrograd Soviets, which was becoming more powerful as the PG lost support.

  • The PS set up the 'Military Revolutionary Committee' to protect the Soviets against a German invasion but the true motive was seizing power, included stationing Red Guards in vantage parts such as bridges and railway stations. Chaired by Trotsky and a Bolshevik membership of 48 out of 66.
  • PG attempted to shut down 2 Bolshevik newspapers in Petrograd; Lenin feared they were trying to gain power over the Bolsheviks- with little fighting as the PG had no military back up other than a small group of Cossacks and the Amazons (unit of female soldiers). Winter Palace was seized and Kerensky fled Petrograd in the disguise of a female nurse.
