Storyboard Text

  • The "Remember The Maine" was an event where the ship The Maine exploded out of nowhere. No one was exactly sure of how it happened but word got around that it was the Spanish who did it. A big influence on why Americans blamed the Spanish was because of newspapers. Newspapers would persuade people to think that the Spanish caused the explosion. In the end, it caused a war known as the Spanish American War. Later people found out that the boat explosion was an accident and the Spanish did not do it.
  • The Panama Canal was a Canal that was very important to have for the U.S.  The Panama Canal allowed for way faster trips on boat from the East to the West. This also made trade cheaper, we didn't have to use as much fuel. Also, it was important because it would eliminate heavy expenses of maintaining 2 different navies.
  • There were many causes of imperialism back then and why we did it. First, by taking over other places it would expand how many resources we could get and increase our production. With more resources we could have more trading opportunities as well. We could also spread our religion to other places and also increase our power within the world.
  • Money = Power
  • The term Yellow Journalism means to use newspapers to influence Americans decisions. Sometimes these newspapers brings people to call for war. For example, "Remember The Maine" the newspaper said that the Spanish did it which made the people angry and ask for war. Even if some stories were false that the newspaper writers were writing about, all they cared for was money.
  • At one point in history, we forced Japan to open their trade. In 1853, the United States sent a steam-powered fleet, led by Matthew Parry, to Japan to force open their trade to outside nations. This show of force convinced the Japanese to work towards Industrialization. The Japanese rapidly modernized after this and soon started the Russo-Japanese War.
  • With the Dollar Diplomacy, Americans believed that American investment abroad would bring stability to troubled regions. This policy would also add power and profit to the U.S without any force. The U.S followed this new policy in Asia and Latin America. The U.S also did not want to give any reason for the European nations to send troops to America.
