Odysseus' men finally find land after an endless voyage and stop at the Island of Polyphemus, but they do not know this yet...
Odysseus then makes a spear to stab the Cyclops in the eye while he is sleeping so they can escape as sheep in disguise.
Odysseus' men enter the cave, looking around for resources for themselves, but Odysseus wanted to see the Cyclops for himself.
"We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield, to pasture his fat sheep, so we looked round at everything inside."~157-160
The men are able to escape as Polyphemus opens the cave and they board the ship, but Odysseus has to brag his victory and they are almost killed.
After looking in the cave for some time, the men realize that the Cyclopes has returned and trapped them inside, he asks them who they are and eats one of his men.
‘Strangers,’ he said, ‘who are you? And where from? What brings you here by seaways—a fair traffic? ~197-200
The men devise a plan in which to fool Polyphemus and escape the cave, which begins by giving him wine...
"Cyclops, try some wine. Here’s liquor to wash down your scraps of men." ~297-300
"Straightforward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye..."~330
