In 1860, Abrham Lincoln got elected. LIncoln was hated in the South. So the Southern states decided to secede because they thought Lincoln was going to abolish slavery. This was one of the causes of the Civil War.
I'm the new president, Abraham Lincoln!!
The battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle in the Civil War. It was from April 12 to April 13, 1861. The Confederate army attacked the Union in an unfinished fort in the harbor at Charleston, South Carolina. The Union surrendered and the Civil War has begun.
The Battle of Gettysburg was from July 1 to July 3, 1863. This was an important battle for the South because they had invaded the North and were planning to defeat the Union one and for all. But the Union defended and sent the South retreating. This war was a big turning point.
The battle took place May 18 to July 4, 1863. Vicksburg was important because it was the lasts major port on the river held by the South. If the North took it they could cut off supply lines. Also Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas would be isolated form the rest of the South. The Union won.
The Confederates surrender because they were running low on resources and they were outnumbered. They discussed the surrender on April 9, 1865. The terms were the South would have to turn in their rifles, but they could return home immediately and keep their horses and/or mules. They were also given food. The South was upset they had to surrender but thankful for the generosity of the North.
THEN THE CIVIL WAR WAS OVER AND IT WAS TIME FOR RECONSTRUCTION.......
