Storyboard Text

  • Viola: “Hi my name is Viola. My car breaks down. Can you repair my car please?”
  • On November 8, 1946, in New Glasgow. Viola goes to a garage because her car breaks down. While waiting for her car she decided to go to the theatre.
  • Mechanic: “Hi, yes, of course, Viola.”
  • Viola: “No I don’t want to because I don’t see well on the balcony.”
  • On the same day, Viola went to the theatre and she sat on the ground floor, which was for Whites only. So, the ticket keeper told her she can’t sit there. He tells her to go to the balcony, which was designated for Black people only. But she refused so the ticket keeper called the cops. They bring Viola to prison.
  • Ticket keeper: “You can’t sit there. You have to go on the balcony.”
  • Viola Desmond was sentenced to 30 days in jail and paid a $26 fine. In the prison Viola was sad because she did nothing bad. She just wants to sit on the ground floor because she wants to see well.
  • Viola: “Why am I here? I do nothing. I just want to sit on the ground floor because I see well from this place.”
