  • The pope rises to power but the other patriarchs do not think he should be in total control of the Christian Church.
  • We're not going to be part of your church anymore.
  • Fine! Be that way!
  • The Byzantine Emperors did not think that worshipping icons was a good thing and so they sent people to destroy them.
  • We are starting our own church. I will lead this church
  • The Byzantine emperors gave up destroying the icons but the two churches did not trust each other.
  • We are splitting from the Roman church and are starting our own church with new rules.
  • In 1054 the two churches split because of their differences. This was called the Great Schism.
  • The roman catholic church made their own rules for worship and priests. The pope headed the church.
  • The eastern orthodox church made new rules that suited them best. The Byzantine emperor headed the church.
