Independent reading assignment for English
Billy, a captain who had just had a stroke, was brought into an inn. After he recovered from the stroke he told a boy who was working there, named Jim, and Jim's mother, Livesey, that there was a chest and where to locate it. When they found it and opened it they found a map that would lead them to treasure that was located on and island called Treasure Island.
Jim and his mother notices that people are walking in and out of the inn. His mother faints, so Jim then tries to hide her so the people walking in and out of the inn would not get suspicious. They figured out of the captain's, Billy's, death and that the chest that Jim opened had been opened. They are furious and are in search of the items that were inside of the chest.
"Well, then, I mean this squire and doctor shall find the stuff, and help us to get it aboard. If I was sure of you all I'd have Cap'n Smollet navigate us halfway back again before I struck."
After one of the crew members of the ship disappear everyone starts to get suspicious. Jim over hears a few people talking and figures out that they are pirates and want to take the treasure for themselves. They say they cannot kill the captain because they need a way to get home. Jim tells his mother and the captain about their plans. They decide to act like they do not know their plans until they get the treasure.
Some of the pirates were arguing whether to kill Jim or not. One of the pirates named Silver calmed down the situation.
"So, Jim, here you are. As you have brewed so shall you drink, my boy. Heaven knows I cannot find it in my heart to blame you; but this much I will say, be it kind or unkind: when Captain Smollett was well, you dared not have gone off; and when he was ill, and couldn't help it, by George, it was downright cowardly!"
Jim, Silver, and the other pirates went out to search for treasure, while LIvesey took care of the sick and wounded pirates. When they found the treasure it was empty. The other pirates thought Jim and Silver were hiding it from them so they attacked them. Luckily LIvesey and one of the crew members, who's name was Ben and was not one of the pirates, came and shot the pirates. Some of the other pirates ran away in fear. After Jim and Silver are saved Ben tells them that he had already found the treasure and hid it.
Jim, Livesey, and the rest of the crew members are approached by a group of pirates. It turns out that they are also searching for the treasure. They end up fighting for it. Jim's crew manages to scare them off and prevent them from continuing to search for the treasure. Jim's crew only suffered one or two casualties.
