  • mom why is it that  I can hear that ring all the way over here
  • well hon because of something called sound waves
  • is that the only type of wave? What are waves
  • No. There are mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves.
  • a mechanical wave requires something called a medium in order to travel. waves in the ocean are mechancial waves
  • electromagnetic waves do not need a medium. We use electromagnetic waves everyday . there are x-rays radio waves and microwaves
  • waves are rhythmic disturbances that carry energy but not matter
  • there are different parts of a transverse wave. you have the amplitude crest trough and wavelength.
  • the crest is the top highest point of the wave and the trough is the opposite. the wavelength is the distance between two troughs or crests. amplitude is how high the waves are
  • the compression is the part of the wave where particles crowd together. Rarefaction is the area where they spread apart.  wavelength is compression to compression or rarefcaction to rarefaction.
  • There are also compression waves. You have the compression rarefaction wavelength.
